10k Steps at 73 Years Old
Training twice a week for nearly four years, resolving decades of back, shoulder, and knee pain most trainers couldn't touch.
Aging Backwards One Workout At A Time
Debbie is a 73-year-old client who has been training with Sam for nearly four years. Before coming to Sam, she had worked with multiple trainers over the years; jumping from trainer to trainer and program to program, most of which relied on traditional strength training approaches that did little to address the specific issues she was actually dealing with.
Debbie came in with a history of disc degeneration in her lower back, a rotator cuff tear, and generalized knee pain. At the time, her back was mostly manageable but surfaced occasionally; her shoulder would flare up with overhead lifting, and her knees bothered her when squatting. She trains with Sam twice a week, one upper body session, one lower body, and outside of those sessions has taken real ownership of her daily habits. She consistently aims for 10,000 steps per day and eats in a calorie deficit, monitoring her progress on a week-to-week basis.
Her programming blends traditional strength training with joint-specific work that directly targets the functional deficits that most likely contributed to her problems in the first place. Although overall training volume is technically lower than what previous trainers had her doing, the strength gains have far exceeded the amount of work put in. That's not a contradiction, it's what joint health makes possible. Strength can only fully express itself when the joints supporting it are functioning properly, and Debbie is one of the clearest examples of that principle in action.
She's one of the best representations of someone who is getting older, but genuinely moving younger.
