Annya's Transformation

Walking for 4 Years
From needing a wheelchair to walking, running, and driving herself to training sessions independently.
From Wheelchair to Running in Barely a Year
Annya was in her early 20s when she suffered an anoxic brain injury as the result of an asthma attack. She went into cardiac arrest and flatlined for seven minutes before being placed in a medically induced coma for nearly a month. Upon waking, she had significant loss of both fine and gross motor control; requiring extensive rehabilitation and a wheelchair just to get around.
Sam met Annya within a year of her accident, approaching her sister and now brother-in-law in the gym to discuss training options. Over the next three years, they slowly bridged her into the exercises she does today through careful progressions of fundamentally important B4 Fitness training principles. The approach was never to skip what she couldn't do; it was always to find a way to get her there. That meant starting from the ground up: establishing proper foot function (her biggest weak point, and one that continues to be a focus), building hip rotation, and developing segmental movement through the spine; while integrating the entire kinetic chain.
What makes Annya's case particularly complex is the contradiction her body presents. She exhibits an exceptional amount of passive range of motion across all joints, with very little active control to support it, while simultaneously feeling tight when stretching, despite that range clearly being present. Training has been a continuous process of gathering data points: which muscles are overactive, which are underactive, which can create tension and which simply cannot yet. Those data points shape every session, allowing the programming to evolve with her rather than around a generic template.
Nearly four years in, Annya now walks independently and lives a fully self-sufficient life, including driving herself to the training sessions she once needed a ride to.
